What's your relationship with fingerstyle guitar? I like a lot of different styles and fingerstyle is one of them
I've recently gotten interested in learning more about fingerstyle in particular
My favorite guitarists play fingerstyle and that's my main focus
I'm specifically interested in fingerstyle blues and blues-related styles
I'm specifically interested in arranging, composing and improvising as a fingerstyle blues guitarist
What is your current short-term goal? I want to be able to play through a whole exercise or tune without stumbling
I want to add new chords and licks to my vocabulary
I want to add new songs to my repertoire
I want to start creating my own arrangements of songs I like
I want to start improvising on the songs I know
How are your right-hand skills? I can play picking patterns but have trouble keeping my thumb consistent
I've learned some arrangements in the alternating thumb style, but steady bass mystifies me
I've learned some arrangements in the steady bass style, but the alternating thumb mystifies me
I'm comfortable learning arrangements in both the steady bass and alternating thumb style
I can keep a steady or alternating bass going while I improvise
How well do you understand the fingerboard? I know the names of the open strings
I can name the roots of the chords in open position
I can move chords up the neck based on finding their roots on the lower strings
I can identify the intervals of the chords I'm playing (3rds, 7ths, etc)
I can identify the scale tones that connect up the intervals of the chords I'm playing
How are you at organizing your practicing / practice time? I pick up my guitar when I feel like it and play things I like to play
I play guitar every day and play a mix of things I know and things I want to know
I have a regular time of day to practice and work on things in a particular order
I have specific things I work on every day to progress in areas like technique and groove as well as learning songs
I have a practice schedule, keep track of my progress in specific areas and work with a metronome
What's one thing that would make a big difference in your playing right away? better right-hand coordination/picking skills
knowing more chords
knowing more theory
getting feedback on my playing
having a better practice routine
What stage are you at in your fingerstyle playing? I'm working on the basics - right-hand technique, forming chords, learning my first songs
I've been learning fingerstyle for a while but have specific things I want to improve in my playing
I have the songs that I know but want more tunes like that to learn and play
I've learned plenty of songs from tab and can play by rote but want to start creating my own arrangements
I want to feel more musical and creative on the guitar, including learning how to improvise
What issues do you have with your current abilities? I rush, slow down and/or stumble when I play
I have trouble remembering songs without the tab
I have trouble adding new songs to my repertoire
I wish I knew how to make my playing more interesting
I wish I knew how to use what I know to make up music of my own
What is your biggest practicing issue? I jump around a lot without any real plan
I play the same things over and over without getting better at them
I take on material that's too hard and get frustrated
I can't figure out in what order to work on things
I don't know how much I should be practicing or how fast I should be getting better
What kind of musical community do you have? I play where no one can hear me, including my cat
My significant other knows my whole repertoire, but nobody else
I have a couple of friends I swap tunes with once in a while
I have friends or a jam I can play with regularly and sometimes post videos on social media
I perform live, post regularly on social media and/or am an active participant in one or more online communities
