Hone your arranging skills with John & David

John Knowles and David Hamburger have both spent decades unraveling the mysteries of fingerstyle guitar for students both far-flung and in person. Evolutions and Substitutions is a chance to learn the essential skill of arranging for the guitar from the complementary perspectives of two master teachers.

Blackbird Evolution

"I want to share my process for arranging a song for solo guitar. I look for an emotional connection to the song. I learn the words. I listen to several performances. I draw on the theory I’ve learned over the years. I take my time.

"I started working on my arrangement of Blackbird after hearing Becky sing it to our son Jay... as a lullaby. I’d played along with the Beatles recording and noticed that Paul’s guitar part had some of the same harmony as Francisco Tárrega’s Lagrima.

"I’ll bring music/TAB and mp3 for Blackbird and Lagrima. And we’ll get to work."

Blues Chord Substitutions

"You can never have too many ways to play through the blues. I'll be showing you how to use Freddie Green chord voicings to expand your fingerstyle blues vocabulary, while helping you understand why they work.

"We'll go over the half-dozen most essential chord shapes before diving into all the different ways you can use these three-note shapes to dress up the basic I, IV and V with all kinds of chord licks, moving bass lines and more.

"I’ll bring music/TAB of some complete choruses of the blues in E, including my original tune Muleshoe Getaway. "
