The workshop will show you how to play over swing, jump blues and jazz versions of the blues progression. We'll cover the most practical, hands-on ways to play all the necessary scales (blues scales, swing scales, altered and diminished sounds) while emphasizing how to get the most authentic,  musical results with them. Here's a complete week-by-week syllabus of what we'll cover:

 

Week 1: From Blues to Swing

• Jump Blues and Swing changes for the blues in Bb.
• The blues scale, the swing scale in the home position
• How to play phrases that resolve to the downbeat.

Week 2: Getting Around The Neck

• Jump Blues and Swing changes for the blues in F
• The blues scale, the swing scale in the "Charlie Christian position"
• ii-V-I licks in the style of Joe Pass and Oscar Peterson

Week 3: Jazz Blues, Part I

• Jazz Blues changes in F
• Altered scales
• I-VI7-ii licks

Week 4: Jazz Blues, Part II

• Jazz Blues changes in Bb
• Diminished arpeggios and scales
• diminished and altered licks in the home position

Week 5: Going Deeper

• Altered from I to IV
• IV IVmin I
• playing the changes on the turnaround

Week 6: Intro to Standards

Play The Changes Intensive is a live-online streaming workshop run on the Zoom platform. Each class session will be recorded and archived online for three months after the course concludes in October.
